Everyone is stunned and saddened by the loss of a one of music’s true good guys. As part of The Beastie Boys, MCA was a visionary in music. He helped pioneer hip-hop to the mainstream, while combining it with unique rock sensibilities. He was also the Beasties artistic eye, directing many of their famous music videos and, later in life, working on several documentary films. Beyond music, MCA was also a tireless advocate in the Tibetan independence movement.
We went through our interview archives and found a handful of soundbites where MCA opened up to us about his music, art, and the fans…

OMG. I hadn’t seen this. I feel like I need to take the afternoon off work… I was in 8th grade, choir class, a buddy and I would go back and forth rnpaipg the songs from Licensed to Ill. In HS I gravitated more toward Metallica type music, then in college rediscovered Beastie, Check Your Head was the shiznat. Caught their show at Lollapalooza in Minneapolis, in 1994 I believe. Those days cemented a life-long love and loyalty for Beastie. These guys are real musicians. Damn. These old bastards were still making great music. Fuck.
never owned anything by the beetaiss and was only familiar with the fight-for-your-right-to-paaaaaarty song from the radio, but was really shocked and sad to hear of yauch’s death (which I learned soon after hearing of a close friend’s diagnosis). I also had no idea of his real life persona but am glad to learn about it here.
A torrent of Twitter messages from entertainers lauded Yauch, 47, as a visionary musical artist, filmmaker and humanitarian.
